Western Arthurs advice

Postby Daddyo » Fri 15 Apr, 2011 1:34 pm

Hi, I am contemplating a short version of the Arthurs over Easter, up to 5 days. I note an earlier post that suggests the A-K option is manageable in 4 days. On a previous attempt I just walked out after 2 days sitting out bad weather. Any suggestions?

Thanks

4 days doing an A - K with the much shorter days of this years Easter isn't all that realistic IMHO.
You'd be better off just going up on to the range, say as far as Oberon & back out the same way.
How far did you get last time before turning back?

Have to agree with Stu!!

even in the long days of summer, 4 days for A-K would mean long hard days.
Nothing to see here.

Thanks for that - yes I had forgotten to allow for the short days. The purpose is to introduce my two daughters (15 and 17) to the toughness of the walk so they can decide if they want to come back for the full version. This strategy worked very well when we hit very fortunate weather and did Cradle and Barn Bluff over an Easter period when they were 10 and 12; since then we have climbed Mt Anne among others. This would be their first trip over 3 days.

If you have 5 days I would suggest Day1 to L. Cygnus - Day 2. L. Oberon - Day 3 Daywalk up Pegasus and Pegasus Sth - Day 4 Back to Cygnus via Orion or Sirius - Day 5 walk out.
Things get far more 'interesting' after Oberon.
I am making the assumption you and your young daughters are up to the challenge of the Arthurs and therefore have plenty of experience?
Possibly best left for a more reliable time of year?

Thanks Step by Step that sounds like a viable option; having day 3 as an optional day walk/rest day/weather day allows a bit of slack. I've walked in plenty of wilderness over the past 35 years, so far survived! Noticing my endurance has begn to seep away lately. My daughters are fitter and nearly as strong as me and have seen patches of difficult terrain and weather so should be no problem there.

Dont underestimate the mud either. We've has alot of rain this year and the already muddy track will be pretty bad. Still it's only about 3hrs worth of walking in...
