South Wellington

Postby Stibb » Sat 16 Jul, 2011 5:55 pm

I was thinking of walking up to South Wellington via the Ice House track, S. wellington track to Mt Wello and then down via the zig zack. Does anybody know if there are snow poles along the route on top. I know it says so on my map but not sure how accurate it is... Is the way up and across obvious or is it easy get off track? I've never been up that way so I just want to make sure I don't do anything stupid now when there's lots of snow.

Hoping for a reply tonight...

The Icehouse track is my favourite route to the top and it's worthwhile looking out for the ruins of 'the icehouse'. The route up top is not easy to follow unless you are confident particularly under snow.

No snowpoles until the summit plateau, but give it a go and turn around if you get uncomfortable. You will enjoy it regardless.

I definitely agree on this being a great route to the top! Had a fantastic day. Other people had been up there before so it was easy to follow the foot steps in the snow. As you come up towards the top (South W) there were several options and probably all of them were a bit off track. No problems though but you just had to crawl out of all the hole you went into :D Crossing over to the Pinnacle was absolutely awesome (and easy to follow). Beautiful views to the mountains to the W and SW, all glistering white in the sun. Going down the zig zag was fun too, a bit slippery and seemed steeper than usual.
