Walls of Jerusalem trip recommendations

Postby philm » Fri 29 Jul, 2011 12:25 pm

We are planning a 5 night trip into the Walls of Jerusalem next April and was interested in some advise on the best locations and overnight places to stay. There iwll be only 2 of us and I was thinking of going from the Walls via the Never Never to the Overland track and out from there. I have a fair amount of walk experience and have a GPS, mpas and EPIRB etc. Is the navigation difficult through to the Overland?
Also what are the huts like to stay in the Walls area?

Hey Philm,

The WOJ is a spectacular place, I have been there once before and I am hooked!. I am heading back in November for 5 days, the basic Itinerary being:

Day#1-2 : Head to Dixons Kingdom Hut Via Trappers Hut and Wild Dog creek, 2 nights at Dixons with a full day in between for some exploring.
Day#3 : Head to Lake Meston via lake ball, adelaide spend night either at north end of Meston or Meston Hut, depending on weather.
Day#4 : Head To Lake Myrtle from Lake Meston cummiting Rogoona on the way, spend a night at myrtle.
Day#5 : Head out via Lake Bill and Blizzard plains.

I would say Heading down the never never and exiting via the south end of the overland track would be a possibility in 5 days if you spent less time in the central walls area
and made some real good time, but I am speaking just from what I have read in books and forums. I am not saying don't give it a crack because I would love to do a walk from
the walls to cradle mountain but I feel more like 8 days would be needed.

AS for the huts I have been in Trappers and Dixons. Trappers is a real emergency shelter Dixons is better. Lake Ball hut I hear is breezy and there is a local possum that is a hungry little fella, Lake meston hut
is probably the best of all that I have mentioned, sleeps 4 comfortably and is sealed well. I believe there is a hut at junction but no more till you get through the NN and reach the overland.

I hope this helps, I am certainly looking forward to my next visit up there.

Yeah thats quite a doable itinery, and agree that to do NN to OT and out is too much for that amount of time. You would be flat out with no time to stop and take pics etc. Better a bit shorter trip, done a bit more thoroughly.

Couple of years ago, a small group of us went to Junction, NN, down to Wadleys, and out on 4th day.
Easier paced and enjoyable.
Just my 2c worth.

Flyfisher,

A couple of questions about approx walking times from Lake Ball Hut, through Lake Aedelaide to Meston.

What is the walking like between:

1. Dixons to Lake Ball hut (1 Hr?)
2. Lake Ball to Lake Adelaide (Junction Track) (2 Hrs?)
3. Lake Adelaide to Lake Meston (3 Hrs?) Meston Hut (5 Hrs?)

Any info as to my estimates would be appreciated?

Cheers

Hi Genesis,

From Dixons to Lake Ball hut about 3k so 1-1.5hr

From Lake Ball hut to Adelaide track about 2 k so 1hr

From Adelaide to Meston about 6k so about 3hr

From Meston to hut about 2.4k so about 1hr.

Not necessarily 100% accurate but close enough.
The Adelaide end of Meston is delightful camping in nice weather. :D

To all those who have climbed Rogoona,

What is the climb to the top of Rogoona like from the Meston Myrtle track?
