Underwear? Whats best to walk in

TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Icebreaker are the least sweaty undies I have ever worn. Make no mistake, wool doesn't always mean warm. I used to be incapacitated after a days heavy walking (or a nights heavy raving) because of my cotton undies chafing right in my groin. Massive welts and horrible pain. Never happens with my IBs. And I'm fatter now than I was back then!

The only complaint I have is that if you're not careful in pulling them up, you can make a big hole in them with very little effort. It's all in the technique.

Hi All I just usually wear bonds undies with lots of stretchy lyca type of stuff in them with the minimum cotton content. they are the boxer type of ones (I cant remember which style they are).
I also have some of the woollen types (they may be Ice Breakers) and they are pretty good too (not so stinky).
I have unfortunately and mistakenly worn 100% cotton boxers on a very wet 4 day walk and chafffffffed so badly (never go walking straight after nightshift)
From my limited and flawed surveys I mostly see the above type of undies being used on walks I do (OK I dont do a check on what people are wearing I just do sort of notice when said garments are hanging off an improvised clothes line when rinsed out..... Umm I'll stop there.
Cheers

You're really overestimating Anatomia. I also thought they were good at first, but they're not durable, they induce a lot of chafing, they get loose pretty quickly, the legs goes up and induce more chafing. Basically they're only good for wearing at work or in town, but for a hike, they're rubbish after a couple of hours. I've stopped using them on hikes.

I don't wear the boyleg for that reason, I wear the briefs. None of those problems are apparent when I am wearing the briefs and I have fat, soft inner thighs that chafe really easily. Of course that doesn't mean everyone is comfortable in them. I believe they're the best I have ever worn.

I bought a couple of pairs of Explorer Extreme Mesh Active Trunks from Big W about a month ago. So far I have not worn them bush walking but have worn them loads of times running and to the gym. I find them very comfortable and they dry quickly. They cost a fair bit but so far I'm happy with that purchase.

For normal to cool conditions I have found Exped work well - pick the style you like. Hot, humid conditions - commando.

I throw a vote in for the macpac marino boxers. I recently did the Overland Track and had no problems with chaffing, smell or wedgies from ridding up with them. Given that I'm a larger guy, chaffing is always a concern on walks but they were perfect and also dried really quickly when rinsed out or after a swim.

I prefer the walking to the raving these days. I don't like the new music. Wubwub? no thanks.

But I do like the icebreaker briefs very much, and the trunks even better.

Mostly though, I use the $3 rivers trunks. But they have to be the ones without the buttons. $3!

With all the stories of chafing, I (touch wood) feel lucky to never have had to deal with it. So I’m probably not much help.

I mostly wear a pair of speedos - we go canyoning as much as bushwalking, so are wet for most of the day (or weekend). In winter I usually just wear cotton, unless I expect rain, in which case the speedos again!

For 19 days in the Kimberley last year I didn’t even bother with the speedos after a few days … except where I knew we’d be in spinifex country :) Much quicker to strip off for a swim if you only have shorts & a t-shirt!

sthughes wrote:I tried Icebreaker briefs - on a 4 day walk I wore them for two days, then when I couldn't put up with them any longer I used my satin boxers, then on day 4 just went commando. Binned the Icebreakers when I got home.

Next I tried some lightweight Macpac merino boxer briefs, but they tended to ride up a bit, but I kept using them until they quickly wore out. Otherwise they were okay.

Now days these are good: http://www.exofficio.com/products/details/mens-give-n-go-boxer-brief.

+10

I don't wear bike pants walking anymore after I found those Give n Go boxers. They have just enough length for me that they alleviate any chafe.

I ended up getting rid of all my other types of jocks and just wear these.

Biggest problem is they're expensive, but they last a long time.

Speaking of hot balls..hmm...perhaps no-one was speaking of hot balls and that's just me..anyways..I would love if a manufacturer of underwear used a 2 fabric system in long underwear.

Kinda like how a lot of upper body garments have lighter fabric in the under arm or side region . Yes I am looking at you, sexy little Arcteryx Atom LT Jacket. How about the same for long underwear in the pants. I have had quite a few instances of absolutely roasting my unmentionables in situations I haven't been able to strip of the leggings. Maybe it would be psychological, psychosomatic, placebo inducing but for the peace of mind that my little swimmers are free to practice for the miracle of life.. I would love a bit of respite in the groin region of underwear.

So what am I trying to say...just this..Fellas go easy on the material on the crotch, Patagonia, IB etc I quite like your uber warm merino long underwear but hey how about easing up around the crotch. There is a reason I have some baggage external to the rest of me .Thats to keep me cool. How about some respite. Thats all I'm asking

You could wear chaps and a rain kilt. Commando in the unmentionables and covering on your legs. You even have a fresh breeze keeping you cool.
