How do people feel about the 70mm on the long end?

My RX 100 II takes some sweet pics and I couldn't be happier. Plus I can't bring myself to carry another 9 grams ;)

Happy to trade for more width and speed - rarely use that end of the focal range anyway. And a pop-up electronic viewfinder? Makes it worth the price to upgrade in my book.

Jeez, I'll have a retired LX3 and RX100 at this rate

With the a7R and this Sony really have the market cornered. The only niche that they haven't got covered that well is the waterproof shockproof area.

Not sure about that. They are pretty dear and lots of consumers still choosing various brands and models out there.

I note the RX100 II is in position 29 and have been in the top 100 for a while. Given how new the Mk III model is, Mk II position position is probably more indicative. Also note, not indicative of market share.

Bah - that's more than I paid two years ago.

And much ($100) more than the current price from Kogan.

As a super ceded model, I suspect there'll be better hunting soon.

These cameras are not loosing their value because they just take fantastic pictures for the market segment they are in, don't hold your breath for one selling at half price as i don't think it will happen.

It's not a finite resource in a constantly moving tech market place, normal process is inevitable.

I'll check back in 6 months and see how your oxygen supply is holding out.

The Mark I was always cheaper than the Mark II (and now Mark III) anyway, so the price hasn't really dropped much, but dig around and if willing buy without local warranty and you'll find even lower prices.

yup. the original model is still a very good camera compared to the latest model... still essentially the same camera with a few tweaks and bells and whistles to it.... i just couldnt believe the photos that came out of my RX100 for such a small camera, i dont think theres any other compact on the market with a zoom lens that can compare to it for picture quality..

the mark one started out at the price the mark three is at now... and so did the mark 2

Yes RonK, both the respective models have a different price point. I scoured the net looking for deals and they were all a compromise in some way. Some had no warranty others had Japanese text on the user menu on the camera etc etc. Ended up with one from the US when I was last there, plus a heap of other gear that my wife questioned upon my return. I used the old need to know excuse, I needed it and I didn't know she needed to know.

The heavier discounts will start in 3-4 months at the latest when Mk III supply becomes full.

The common marketing influenced comparison on the lens is not very helpful eg. F2.8 at 70-mm, compared to its predecessor's F4.9 at 100-mm. What the real question is, what is the effective aperture on the old lens at 70mm? It obviously won't be at f2.8, but it's no f4.9 either. f3.5-4 perhaps?

I just ran a test. Zoom of 2.5 gives a focal length of 69mm and a minimum f stop of f/4.0

So if the new version goes f/2.8 @ 70mm that's a worthwhile improvement.

Thanks for testing it out there Michael. I agree it's a significant improvement at 1 stop and potentially other improvements to the lens IQ too. Just wasn't impressed by the way the specs were compared and presented. I like the 24mm field of the new model though...
